Summary

Tattoo seals and eye makeup containing iron oxide pigments can deflect significantly in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) systems. Removing these items before an MRI is recommended to prevent potential complications.

To evaluate the mechanical effects of magnetic gradients on tattoo seals and eye makeup.

Summary:

Seven tattoo seals and three eye makeup types (mascara, eyeshadow, eyeliner) were tested on a 3.0-Tesla MRI.
Eighty-five percent of tattoo seals and eye makeup (mascara, eyeshadow) exceeded ASTM deflection guidelines (>45 and >40 degrees, respectively).
Ferromagnetic pigments, like iron oxide, were identified as the cause, despite minimal translational forces due to low mass.

Impact:

Findings highlight potential risks associated with certain cosmetic products and tattoos during MRI scans.
Recommends removal of these items prior to MRI examinations to mitigate secondary issues.
Informs MRI safety protocols and patient screening procedures.
