Summary

Unzipped carbon nanotubes (u-CNTs) demonstrate enhanced biocompatibility and osteogenic potential compared to pure CNTs. These findings suggest u-CNTs are promising for bone tissue engineering applications.

Background:

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) possess unique physicochemical properties, driving interest in diverse applications.
Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) require modification for optimized performance and biocompatibility.

Purpose of the Study:

To synthesize and characterize unzipped carbon nanotubes (u-CNTs) via strong acid treatment.
To evaluate the biocompatibility and osteogenic potential of u-CNTs for tissue engineering.

Main Methods:

Unzipping of multi-walled carbon nanotubes using strong acid treatment.
Characterization using FTIR, XRD, TGA, TEM, and SEM.
Assessment of biocompatibility with bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells and evaluation of osteogenic potential through mineralization and gene expression analysis.

Main Results:

Homogeneous and stable solutions of u-CNTs were obtained.
u-CNTs showed increased zeta potential and diameter but decreased thermal stability compared to pure CNTs.
u-CNTs exhibited improved biocompatibility, reduced reactive oxygen species generation, enhanced mineralization, and upregulated osteogenic gene markers.

Conclusions:

Unzipped carbon nanotubes demonstrate superior biocompatibility and osteogenic potential compared to pristine CNTs.
u-CNTs show promise as a biomaterial for bone tissue engineering applications.
