Summary

Patients with chronic pancreatitis exhibit elevated basal salivary sodium and chloride concentrations due to increased parasympathetic drive. These ionic changes normalize upon stimulation, suggesting altered salivary gland function in this condition.

Background:

Elevated sweat sodium and chloride in chronic pancreatitis are linked to increased parasympathetic activity.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine if basal salivary sodium and chloride concentrations are elevated in chronic pancreatitis.
To explore the role of parasympathetic drive in salivary ion concentration changes.

Saliva was collected without stimulation to assess basal concentrations.
Salivary secretion was stimulated using citric acid.
Parasympathetic blockade was induced, and cholecystokinin (CCK) perfusion was performed.
