Primary affective disorder: anxiety in unipolar and bipolar depressed groups

Summary

Background:

Depression is a common mental health condition with various subtypes.
Bipolar depression and unipolar depression are distinct diagnostic categories.
Anxiety is a frequent comorbidity in depressive disorders.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare anxiety levels between patients with bipolar depression and unipolar depression.
To investigate potential differences in psychopathology during acute depressive states.

Main Methods:

A cohort of 50 hospitalized patients diagnosed with depression was assessed.
Participants were categorized into bipolar depressed (29 patients) and unipolar depressed (21 patients) groups.
The IPAT Anxiety Scale was administered to measure anxiety levels.

Main Results:

The bipolar depressed group reported significantly lower scores on the IPAT Anxiety Scale compared to the unipolar depressed group.
This finding aligns with previous research indicating less psychopathology in bipolar groups during acute depressive phases.

Conclusions:

Bipolar depression may present with lower subjective anxiety during acute depressive episodes compared to unipolar depression.
Test-taking defensiveness, particularly denial, could contribute to lower reported anxiety and MMPI scores in bipolar groups.
Further research is warranted to explore the mechanisms underlying these observed differences.
